Self-Drive Kruger · from Mjejane

Your guide isthe windscreen.

Malelane Gate is 20km from your lodge. Here’s everything you need — gates, routes, times, safety, and a sample day plan — to drive yourself into southern Kruger with confidence.

Why Self-Drive

Your pace. Your sightings.

A self-drive through Kruger is one of the last great road trips on earth. You set the pace, park at the sightings you want, and stretch a morning at a river crossing if a herd of elephant is taking their time.

Mjejane Game Reserve’s position makes it one of the best bases in the country for self-driving. Malelane Gate is a 20-minute drive. By 06:30 you’re in prime lion country.

Kruger gates from Mjejane

Two ways into the park

Both Malelane and Crocodile Bridge deliver you into prime Big 5 territory in southern Kruger. Choose based on how far you want to drive on the N4 before you start looking.

Malelane Gate

~20 km from Mjejane~25 min drive via the N4

The closest Kruger gate to Mjejane and the standard entry point for day trips. Opens from sunrise, well-signposted, and gives you fast access to the H3 towards Berg-en-Dal and the H4-2 towards Lower Sabie.

Crocodile Bridge Gate

~50 km from Mjejane~50 min drive east on the N4

A great alternative gate when you want to explore the south-east. Crocodile Bridge is a classic Big 5 area — excellent for lion, cheetah and general game on the H4-2 up to Lower Sabie.

Before you go

SANParks essentials

SANParks asks all day visitors to book a slot in advance and to arrive at the gate with a signed indemnity form. Get both sorted from your sofa — it’ll save you 20 minutes of paperwork in the queue.

Rather not self-drive?

Everything you need to know

From gate times to the route that finds the cats. Save this page — it holds up offline on your phone once loaded.

Gate Times

Gates open at sunrise (05:30–06:00 in summer, 06:00–06:30 in winter) and close at sunset (17:30–18:30 depending on season). Always check current times at SANParks. Late arrivals are fined.

Speed Limits & Road Rules

50 km/h on tar roads, 40 km/h on gravel, 20 km/h in camps and at river crossings. Stay on designated roads. Getting out of your vehicle is only allowed at picnic spots and rest camps.

Safety First

Never get out outside designated areas. Keep windows closed near predators. Keep a safe distance — these are wild animals. If an elephant approaches, reverse slowly. Never feed animals.

Fuel & Supplies

Fill up in Malelane before the gate. Fuel inside the park is available at some rest camps (Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Berg-en-Dal) but don't rely on it. Pack water, snacks and a cooler box.

Best Game Viewing

First 2 hours after gate open and last 2 hours before close. Drive slowly. Scan the road edges, water crossings and open clearings. Always stop at bridges — they're sighting hotspots.

Recommended Routes

The S114 along the Crocodile River is excellent for hippo, crocodile and elephant. Head for Lower Sabie via the H4-2 for diverse game including big cats. Skukuza is ~1.5 hrs drive and has a shop, restaurant and fuel.

SANParks Wild Card

If you plan multiple Kruger day trips, a SANParks Wild Card can save you serious money on daily conservation fees. One year of unlimited access across all SANParks reserves.

Which Gate to Pick?

Malelane for early-morning drives and a half-day loop. Crocodile Bridge for a full-day, east-side adventure. Both deliver you into prime southern-Kruger Big 5 country.
